Dedicated to Excellence in Orthopaedic Care
Mr Edward O’Bryan is a consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, with subspecialist expertise in hip and knee surgery, as well as traumatic sports injuries of the lower limb. He has been trained both at home and in various international centres.
This includes robotic joint replacement using muscle sparing techniques for the hip and knee, management of all sport knee injuries such as the ACL and meniscus, and preservation of the knee such as cartilage reconstruction, meniscal reconstruction and osteotomies. He manages traumatic injuries of the lower limb, such as fractures and tendon injuries from the hip down to the foot and ankle.
Edward was born and raised in Camberwell, Melbourne, and completed school at Xavier College. He spent a year prior to university working at Glenferrie Private Hospital as a surgical theatre technician for orthopaedic surgeons. Thanks to this opportunity, he knew before university that not only would he be an orthopaedic surgeon, but he would be a hip and knee subspecialist. This allowed him to laser-focus on these areas from the very beginning.
He completed his medical degree with honours at Monash University, supplemented with a postgraduate diploma in surgical anatomy at The University of Melbourne where he was awarded the prize for the highest mark in the orthopaedic cohort. He worked as an anatomy tutor at Monash University during his final years as a medical student, specialising in limb anatomy.
After two years as a junior doctor at Monash Health, Edward worked as an orthopaedic registrar at Linacre Private Hospital and Alfred Health for two years prior to commencing the accredited orthopaedic program. This saw him rotate around various Victorian health networks before being awarded a fellowship of the Royal Australasian College.
He has since completed subspecialist fellowship training in various local and international centres. (Link to Fellowships page)
Outside of his clinical practice, Edward also has an academic career. He is currently an academic affiliated with Monash University conducting research and supervising junior doctors and students on various orthopaedic research projects.
He has embarked on a PhD at Queensland University of Technology, under the supervision of orthopaedic surgeons Professor Ross Crawford, Michael McAuliffe and Chris Jones. The PhD is intended to explore the development of a robotic system to resurface the patella during robotic total knee replacement.
Edward’s special interest in research is in registry data, and as such when he finds the time he runs the OrthoPodcast, focused on understanding registry data.
His interests outside of orthopaedics include rowing, golf, gamefishing, and above all else listed thus far, his family.
