Sport Knee Surgery

Procedure Overview

Trochleoplasty is a significant surgery. It involves lifting the cartilage at the front of the femur off the bone, recreating a normal groove in the bone, and anchoring the cartilage back down.

The goal is to recreate a groove that is harmonious with the patella’s shape so that the patella can glide properly.

Mr O’Bryan employs this technique in the rare instance that it is indicated, because the postoperative period is risky and involves extensive rehabilitation. Where possible, a 3D printed guide that is customised to the patient’s bone can be used to try and perfect the angle and depth of the trochlea to optimise patella movement.
