Condition Overview
Various fractures in the lower limb are associated with sporting injuries, or osteoporosis in later life.
Stress fractures of the femoral neck are occasionally seen in very active runners, which can be life-changing if not managed appropriately. Often these are best managed without surgery, but with a strict rehabilitation program characterised by decreasing activity. There are select biomechanical situations where surgery is primarily indicated. As this is typically seen in young active athletes, preserving the hip joint could not be more important.
Complete patella fractures are linked closely with quadriceps tendon or patellar tendon ruptures, as these structures are of the same ilk, and should be managed with early surgery unless not separated meaningfully.
Fractures around the knee such as the femoral condyle or tibial plateau can be devastating injuries, often requiring surgery.
